We often underestimate the importance of maintaining a hair care regimen – especially this time of year! The sun and surf can easily get the best of your hair – think crunch, dry ends and dull, lifeless color. Unfortunately, hair does not have the ability to repair itself, therefore once damage is done; there is no turning back. It’s up to you to fix and protect your strands!
Would you ever even dream of throwing your prized Hermes silk scarf in the washer machine with any old detergent? No way, right?! Well, think of your hair as fabric just as fragile as that scarf. Hair needs to be handled with care – it is without question our top accessory! Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks to having healthy, vibrant and shiny locks all summer long.
1.) Quality shampoo is a must. Even just one wash with a sulfate-infused shampoo is enough to cause harm to your hair. My go-to of choice is Rene Furterer’s Carthame Moisturizing Milk Shampoo!
2.) Steer clear of over-cleansing. Washing your hair everyday strips natural oils and causes damage to your mane. Dry shampoo, such as L’Oreal Fresh Dust, should be your new BFF – it extends the life of your blowout, while preserving your hair’s nutrients!
3.) Always protect hair from heat styling. Heat protectant sprays can work wonders for maintaining great hair. I recommend L’Oreal Thermo Repair Blow-Dry Spray. Hot tools can reach up to 500 degrees – which is fine for cooking French Fries, but when it comes to our hair, not so good!
4.) Shield strands from sun. Embrace all the chic hats and colorful scarves this season by sporting them on the beach or while lounging by the pool. Too hot to cover up? Opt for a UV-blocking leave-in, such at , which blocks 90% of UV rays, hydrates locks and is waterproof.
5.) No swim cap? No problem! Pre-saturated hair is less likely to absorb the minerals and chemicals found in saltwater and chlorine-drenched pool water. Be sure to dress your tresses with a leave-in treatment prior to taking a dip. Try L’Oreal Force Vector Thermo-Active Treatment – I love it!

Spring seems to always be the perfect enchanting setting for a special event, perhaps that’s why it’s dubbed the unofficial prom and wedding season! If you’re planning on celebrating something special this spring, I’m here to get you on the fast track to looking fabulous, while being budget-savvy (yes it is possible!). The most effective way to look polished for your upcoming soiree is by showcasing stunning skin. Be beautiful without breaking the bank with our signature “Get Up and Glow” facial and a hand-applied sunless bronzing session. You’ll look like a million bucks!
Our popular “Get Up and Glow” facial revitalizes your complexion and provides a youthful glow, ideal for problematic skin. It is the perfect solution to prevent and heal pesky blemishes. I love this treatment because it includes a skin analysis and product recommendations, providing you with professional knowledge to assist in building an ongoing, unique skin care regimen. This facial is a fabulous deal for just $65!
Our hand-applied sunless bronzing session is a must! Getting a healthy, sun-kissed “tan” has never been more convenient. The treatment takes just under an hour and the results last up to ten days. Our special bronzing gel is hand-applied; ensuring a natural looking, even tone. And it smells like coconut to boot! To achieve the best coverage, be sure to exfoliate the night prior to your appointment – I suggest using our exclusive Rise Skincare Sugar Butter Body Scrub. This treatment is $95, and includes a complimentary full size Sugar Smoothie Body Cream – yours to keep!
Be the best version of you and embrace all the season has to offer – while sporting gorgeous, glowing skin!
Come see me soon!
Best Wishes,

Sunny days, beach getaways and welcomed warmth will be arriving before we know it! Since the weather will be heating up, so should your style. The ideal look – clean, fresh and bright.
Face Time
Lets start with your base. Sheer is the way to go. I suggest selecting an oil-free foundation or tinted moisturizer (both should contain SPF!). To achieve seamless coverage, visit me for a custom-blended foundation ($46) or tinted moisturizer ($28). No one will have any idea you’re wearing make-up at all, I promise! To avoid shine throughout the day, prior to applying your base, utilize an oil-controlling primer. One of my favorites is Bare Escentuals Prime Time Oil Control Foundation Primer, and for only $22 it’s a steal. We are proud to offer Bare Escentuals products in our Philadelphia location!
EYE-deal
Vintage-inspired cat eyes are back in a big way (thanks Adele). In order to get fierce peepers, use a liquid liner. Uncomfortable using a liquid liner? Opt for a gel or pencil that is designed to glide on like liquid, but provides you with more control. The cat eye trend can be sported during the day or after hours. To get a simple, but bold daytime look, stick to low-key shadows. Pump up the drama at night by creating a smoky eye. The updated smoky eye doesn’t call for just the usual black/gray combo, branch out and try using hues of deep blue or rich green. Avoid smears and creases by applying Bare Escentuals Prime Time Eyelid Primer ($18). To accentuate your eyes, and your entire face for that matter, be sure to keep your brows well groomed. And here’s a little secret…thicker brows make you look younger! Here’s a tip…to save time, focus on your eyes when beginning your make-up application. This will shield you from having to touch-up your base in case of eye make-up smudges or residue.
Gettin’ Cheeky
Blush and bronzer are the best way to reflect the essence of summer on your face. I love the bright cheek trend. Think shades of peach, pink and tangerine. They’re so fun! Don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and experiment with bolder colors than what you’re used to. Bronzer is an awesome way to fake sun-kissed skin. To get an awe-worthy, healthy glow try Bare Escentuals Faux Tan Matte ($19).
Lip Service
Bright lips are “it” lips. Bubble gum pink is a must-have kissable shade this spring/summer. Popular lip colors match the color palette suggested for cheeks (peach, pink and tangerine), plus red. Statement make-up shy? Go for a sultry gloss instead!
Come see me at Jay Michael Salon and Spa at The Phoenix (1600 Arch)!
All the best,
Harriet

I’m really proud to say that I have truly enjoyed working at the Philadelphia location for the past four years. I am also extremely honored to be the US President of Haute Coiffure Française (HCF), which allows me to be an ambassador for this esteemed, exclusive French hairdressing group. Just a few weeks ago HCF debuted its spring 2012 collection in Paris, France and yours truly had a front row seat! Here are some of spring’s most coveted trends straight from the runway!
COLOR: Back to Basics
Say au revoir to chunky highlights. Soft face-framing highlights have made a strong comeback. Earth tones were plentiful on HCF’s runway, lots of vibrant copper and sandy blonde shades, paired with skinny strips of lighter hues. This spring platinum blonde will also be very popular. To get glamorous once the weather warms up, be sure to get back to basics and keep it simple. As for the ombre craze, it will be fading away before you know it!
CUTS: Blunt & Beautiful
Blunt bangs will be the season’s most popular trend. Bangs are usually reserved for fall, but HCF suggests reaping fringe benefits all year round. Another must-have ‘do – long layers. Long layers offer movement and volume, which are spring 2012′s staples. Definitely incorporate these aspects into your own personal style. The best way to describe the ideal look would be romantic. Locks should be full and bouncy, rather than stiff and structured – we’re talking touchable.
MEN: All About Movement
What’s the ideal spring look for guys? It’s all about volume-boosting layers on top paired with short sides. Long layers create movement with an edge. The style is polished, but a bit undone. I suggest adding some pomade to better define your cut’s texture. I’m a big fan of this style because it creates a very cool, hip vibe that says, “I don’t have to try hard to look good.”

Winter doldrums have you down? Don’t worry, cold weather has an emotional impact on just about everyone this time of year. When the mercury plunges, many of us retreat in our homes and daily patterns tend to get ho-hum. We get board and fall victim to mundane routines. And what do we do when we get board? Well, many of us find the burst of rejuvenation we’re seeking in simply changing up our look. We’re always amazed at the amount of new clients we see during the coldest months! Studies show that color impacts the way we feel, interact and move through our day. Color alters our demeanor and dictates our mood in many instances – I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel the same putting on that little orange dress. The little black dress has some sort of power, not found in any other hue, right? Color is personal. Color is definitive. Color gets noticed. The colorists at Jay Michael are seasoned experts in not only foils and mixtures…but they’re also highly trained LISTENERS. Each service provider takes the time to get to know the person in the chair. That means we want to understand what makes you…you. Our job is to accentuate the beauty found within. Hair color is, in a word, transformative, but each individual is different and we celebrate that! If you’re thinking about a new color, highlights. low lights or just want to say good bye to the greys once and for all, come talk to us. We believe that EVERYONE has more fun when they feel good and look their best. Want some inspiration? Just visit our boards on Pintrest! http://pinterest.com/jaymichaelsalon/colorful/

At Jay Michael Salon and Spa, living a beautiful life means living a safe and healthy life and placing the well-being of our employees and clients ahead of the corporate bottom line.
Upon reading recent information disseminated by various governmental agencies and reviewing relevant media reports, we have made an informed, proactive and conservative decision to discontinue performing Brazilian Blowouts in all of our salons, until appropriate safety information is released.
Despite the popularity of this service and its obvious and acclaimed benefit in providing ease of styling, we do not want to jeopardize the health or safety of our valued employees or clients.
We will no longer carry or use “Brazilian Blowout Acai Smoothing Solution” and the “Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Solution.”
We are 100% confident that our ever-popular Keratin treatments (formaldehyde-free) provide the same
(if not better) results. We hope our clients support our decision to stress the importance of providing a healthy and safe salon environment above the benefits of a hair service that provides short-term, but possibly risky results.
Thank You.

Many vacationers wait until they reach their destination to de-stress, often overpaying for an underwhelming experience. Don’t settle for mediocrity with a hefty price tag. It’s important for you to prepare your mind, body and spirit for relaxation prior to your departure. This will allow you to thoroughly appreciate your getaway to the fullest.
Think of all the pressure that often accompanies a trip – packing, catching your flight, triple-checking your reservations, hoping your resort actually looks as it does in photos. There is plenty to worry about. Ideally, you want to arrive at your destination with a positive outlook, free of anxiety. Pre-vacation massages grant you the ability to do just that.
Who better to get you relaxed than your go-to (or your soon-to-be) massage therapist? The art of massage should be a very personal experience, rather than some sort of one-size-fits-all assembly line process. Unfortunately, massage sessions at resorts all too often seem like the latter. For a five-star massage come see me! With over 20-years of experience, I can work out your stress knots and kinks so that you achieve optimum serenity.
Wishing you tranquil travels!

We were honored to be a part of the first-ever Flyers Wives Fashion Show, serving as the official beauty team for this stellar event. The looks on the catwalk showcased Nicole Miller’s Spring 2012 Artelier Collection and were donned by the Flyers wives themselves and they looked spectacular! Our own stylists and make up artists from our Ardmore, Radnor and Philadelphia locations participated behind the scenes, readying each model for the runway. We donated our time and talents benefitting the Comcast Spectacor Charities, which serves numerous worthy non-profits in and around the greater Philadelphia area. Missed this debut event? Check out the highlights by viewing our exclusive film, produced in-house.

I love bridal and special occasion hair. There’s nothing I enjoy more than creating “that perfect look” to complement an evening dress or bridal gown.
After all, every woman wants to look her best in all those photos! Whether it’s creating a modern updo with floral accents and/or hair jewelry or cascading double-take curls with painstaking care, my goal is to listen and deliver. Each client is different – and each client’s vision for that special day is unique. That’s why I sit down with my brides before ever touching their hair. There’s nothing more important than making her dreams come true! I want my clients to get the same feeling walking out of our salon as they will walking down that aisle. So if it’s a wedding, prom, black-tie bash, special occasion or just an event or party you’ve been looking forward to. I want to make you beam!
